The American art you grew up looking at was built largely by queer hands.
Using works currently on display at the DMA as a guide, Badge Of Pride founder Adrian Cardwell traces a century of queer influence in American art. From Marsden Hartley's coded modernism and Robert Rauschenberg's artistic revolution to Andy Warhol's transformation of celebrity and culture, the talk reveals how LGBTQ+ artists and communities helped shape the American artistic canon.
Through the stories behind the works, audiences will discover how questions of identity, visibility, friendship, love, and belonging have influenced American art for generations. The result is a fresh perspective on familiar masterpieces and a deeper appreciation for the queer history hiding in plain sight.
